Your Child's Library Card

Congratulations on signing your child up for a Barrington Area Library card!

You are your child’s first—and best—reading role model. When children see that parents enjoy a magazine, newspaper or the latest best seller, they learn to develop a love of reading too. Research shows that good readers make good learners and it is never too early to start growing a reader.

At the library and on our Web site, your child may:

Check Out Library Materials:
Our large selection of books, audiobooks, music and DVDs covers a wide spectrum of genres and topics. Your child can dive into a preferred hobby or interest, and discover new favorites. Thousands of e-books and digital audiobooks may be checked out electronically and read on a computer or mobile device. We also provide computer/Internet access here at the library, and excellent homework help, in person and online.

Attend a Library Program:
Throughout the year, we offer an array of fun programs that encourage reading, imagination, and exploration. Story times are open to all children, and include activities that appeal to multiple age levels and attention spans. Contact us to discuss special accommodations or to inquire about our programs. See our online events calendar and newsletters for a complete listing.

Be Curious and Creative:

Our newly renovated Youth Services department is coming in 2014! Families will enter a world of interactive fun and learning designed especially for children. Through dramatic play, hands-on exhibits and the latest technology, kids will find the opportunity to explore and create, while building important literacy skills.

More about your child’s library card

Our Youth Services department offers a wide selection of materials for younger patrons. Parents should be aware that children have access to all materials in the library. The library staff will not monitor or censor your child’s selections. As a parent or guardian, you are responsible for all materials charged to this card.

Here are several ways you can stay attentive to what your child is checking out of the library:

1) Visit the library with your child and select materials together.

2) If your child visits without you, talk to your child beforehand about which library materials are appropriate for your family.

3) Your child’s library card comes with an attached keycard. You may wish to keep one of the cards with you, which you may use to access your child’s library account in person or online.

4) Library cards are renewed every three years. The renewal period is a great time to talk with your child about family expectations and selecting appropriate library materials.

5) You know your child and your family’s values best. Consider previewing materials before sharing them with your child.

6) Have a question about a specific title or want help finding materials for your family? Just ask us. We’re always happy to help.
