Spectacle

by Adrienne Janci

On Display July 30th – August 28th

Circus and carnival imagery have always fascinated the artist.  Janci’s past series of works have included large-scale paintings of rundown, overgrown roller coasters and mixed media painting installations which abstractly capture the feel of an abandoned fairground.  Stepping away from these oversized interpretations of the subject, she began to create very small, minimal paintings which featured pale legs attempting to perform various circus acts.  By portraying only legs, Janci dehumanizes her subjects, removing their unique identities - they exist only to provide entertainment and nothing more.  Although the depictions are thought of as whimsical and humorous, her series suggests that these performers represent people whose lives are simply a “big show” put on for the pleasure and entertainment of others.

Adrienne Janci was born in Rochester, NY, and moved to Barrington, IL, with her family as a teen.  She studied art at Barrington High School and continued her studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2005.  Though primarily a painter, Janci often works in mixed media, and she is largely influenced by the work of Outsider Artists. Adrienne resides in Chicago, loves cats, enjoys roller coasters, and is afraid of ghosts (but in a good way).

Topography, Light and Magic

by Robert McGinley

On Display September 24 th – October 23th

Photographed on his family's Barrington farmland, Robert McGinley's landscape images are both explosive and ethereal.  As a child, he developed a deep appreciation for wild, rural, open spaces.   Influenced by pioneering photographers such as Richard Misrach and processes such as Japanese Sumi ink painting, McGinley creates the type of images that invite and engage the viewer. Some of these images reflect a more contemplative vision, others illustrate the interaction between human elements and natural spaces.  His photographs are a brilliant interplay of color and light achieved by careful timing to obtain perfect confluences of weather, light, and landscape.  These works invite you to embrace open land and deep horizons, while raising awareness that these sites could be destroyed forever.

Before devoting himself to landscape photography, Robert McGinley was an award winning filmmaker.  After he graduated with a B.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, McGinley's family asked him to manage 400 acres of farmland in Barrington.  Following his parents' passing, McGinley fought to protect both the land and the watershed from development.  His photographs of the farm played an essential role in convincing authorities to grant the largest conservation easement  in Illinois.  McGinley continues to photograph the farm and its wildlife areas to raise awareness for the need to preserve natural habitats and resources.  Presently, he splits his time between his studios in Santa Monica, California and Barrington, Illinois.
