Who can get a library card? How do I get a library card?

Library cards are issued to individuals who reside within the Barrington Public Library District and to individuals who own or rent property within the Barrington Public Library District. Library cards are available at the Customer Service Desk. Photo identification (driver's license, state I.D. card, school I.D.), proof of residence (driver's license, residential ownership or rental, property tax bill, utility bill), and a fully-completed registration form are required.  In compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, you must be 13 or older in order to complete this registration. To begin the registration process online, fill in this web form.

A child in eighth grade or younger may receive a library card in his/her own name with the signature of a parent or legal guardian who shows his/her photo I.D. and proof of residence.

A cardholder from an Illinois library participating in the Statewide Reciprocal Borrowing Program, but outside the Barrington Public Library District, must show photo identification with a current address in addition to a card from his/her home library.

Library cards expire after three years. Library cards will be renewed upon request, with photo identification, if all outstanding charges and fees are paid.

Each patron is responsible for all books and other materials charged to his/her library card and any charges or fees incurred. Parents and legal guardians are responsible for materials charged to their children's library cards and any charges or fees incurred. Want information on loan periods and overdue fines? I lost my library card. What should I do?

Library cards that are lost or stolen should be reported missing immediately so that use of the card can be stopped. The patron is responsible for all materials borrowed on his/her card until the card is reported missing.

I received notification that my library card is about to expire. What should I do?

You are now able to begin the library card renewal process online! Find instructions here.

Where else can I use my Barrington Area Library card?
